Victoria Places 2nd in B-Division Nationals

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Just a big thanks to the Victoria Nationals team members for their efforts over the weekend. For those of you who weren’t there, the Victoria team finished second in the B division! Quite the achievement, the round robin saw us have a tough draw with Vancouver, a good win against Calgary, and a tired loss to Edmonton. Come the finals, our true colours came through and we convincingly demolished the Vancouver team (6-2) to make it through to the final against Edmonton. We played a great final, scoring the first 2 goals (some might say we should have been awarded the 3rd goal too) and we had a 2-1 lead at half time. We had them well rattled. Unfortunately their fitness won through and they took the game but I was most impressed with our dedication!

Victoria had already gained the respect of the other teams by simply fielding a team for Nationals, but when we started winning games, a lot of people sat up to take notice! I was personally impressed with how each and every team member lifted a few gears, it was incredible to notice the difference in all of you!

A few key moments from the competition…

  • Yes I was the first (and only?) member to take a penalty… hey it was to save a goal!
  • Vice-Captain Patrik and Big Jim combining to score a goal against Vancouver A-Division National Team!
  • Patrik scoring that goal by sending a ~63 foot flick over Roger’s (Vancouver) stick (that doesn’t happen every day!)
  • Patti’s ‘crushing blow’ to the ‘big guy’ on the Vancouver team (I particularly enjoyed that one)
  • The birth of the “Victoria Demons” - our new team name
  • … and many more

Next challenge… send a team to a competition?

Upcoming Practice Schedule

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Friday April 13 and 27 are regular practice sessions

Friday April 20 we can start at 8:30 instead of 7:30.  We will have to move lane ropes.

There are swim meets on Friday May 4 and June 8.  We have booked Monday May 7 at 8:30 and June 11 at 9:00 instead.

Friday May 18 the Underwater Hockey Nationals organisers have requested a 7:30 practice time for a Junior team training clinic.  I contacted Melanie and it is not certain whether this practice will go ahead or not.  A number of our Victoria people will be playing in the Nationals so I am not sure whether there would be a need for a practice that Friday (those not playing please respond with your interest or not).  We are leaving a decision on that date until we have more information.

We have had a week off hockey.  Lets see some good turnouts this week.

We won a Sportsmanship Trophy

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Last night the Victoria Underwater Hockey club was awarded the Pacific Coast Championships Sportsmanship trophy for our excellent conduct both under the water and above it. This was a little unexpected and we’re very honored to be the recipients of such an award. Way to go Brad and Patrik for setting the standard and tone for our play for the weekend.

Victoria placed 5th Overall!

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

A big hearty congratulations go to our Victoria PCC team which placed 5th overall in the mixed division. With Captain Brad and Co-Captain Patrik leading the way, the whole club played hard, and reaped the rewards. Considering this was our first PCC team in 10 years, having never played together (not enough people to play a full 10 on 10), and 1/2 our players had played only 20 games or so going into the tournament - we have definitely played our little hearts out. Well done all!

Photos from Friday are now in the photos section, with more from the rest of the weekend coming soon.
